Portrait Parties

OmLight Portrait Parties are an economical and super fun way to get your yoga in front of Jim’s lens. Just show up at the studio, pay a $49 shooting fee and get as much posing and images in as we can fit in 90 minutes. Typically we’ll have an assistant there editing photos and posting them on Facebook right away. There are also discounted prices on getting prints and DVDs on the spot.

How it works

You can show up anytime, but if you come at the beginning we’ll have a group gathering and warmup. You’ll pay your sitting fee of $49, and we’ll start shooting. We’ll get each of you in front of the camera for a number of poses and then rotate. You’ll get as many turns on the mat as we can fit in during the party. The OmLight assistant at the shoot will take the images from the camera and be editing them in real-time. While someone else is working with me on the mat, you can be looking at the images we’ve taken and pick some to put on Facebook. Your shooting fee includes posting 5 images to Facebook. If you like more than 5, you can purchase additional Facebook images for $15 for each 5 images. They’ll go up on Facebook right from the shoot. Often partner posing and creative multi-person shots come out from the creative vibe of the whole group. Be open and willing and great images will happen! At the end of the party, we’ll have a group cool down and enjoy a Shavasana before calling it quits.

What to wear

Since we’re capturing your spirit and appearance, you should feel good and creative about what you wear.  For women, long pants, either in a solid or simple pattern. A yoga top or sports bra, again solid or simple pattern. Great to have your torso exposed if you’re comfortable with that. Halters work great for showing off those back muscles. Jewelry is great, and in fact big earrings, malas, bracelets and necklaces look really good.  You’re welcome to bring as many articles as you want and change during the session.

For men, long pants or calf length. Either no shirt if you’re comfortable, or a sleeveless top. Wristbands and pendants are great.

If you have tattoos, you might think about what clothes show them off the best. For instance if you have upper back ink, you could do a halter top, or if lower back, pick a pant with a waistband that shows them. Men, if you have them on your legs, bring some shorts.

One of the big fun parts of a portrait party is “playing dress up”. Be open and creative about bringing outfits. It could be your old prom dress, or a Halloween costume, or a wild hat, gloves and a boa. I’ve photographed knee boots, high heels, club dresses and angel wings.

Hair and makeup

I generally prefer to shoot people with their hair down. It shows flow and movement when you’re posing. But don’t stress about it; it’s about what makes you feel good. Makeup can be light or exotic, depending on what you’re feeling. If you’re into such things, stick on bindis, wild eyelashes or any other decoration are wonderful. There is a makeup table and mirror in the studio.
